Church History
The Centenary Baptist Church, Warangal, has traversed an extraordinary journey since its humble inception in 1893, when pioneering American Baptist Missionaries first arrived in this region. From its modest beginnings as a small mission station to its current thriving community of faith, our church has bravely navigated numerous challenges and celebrated countless blessings.
The year 1874 witnessed a pivotal moment in Indian Baptist history with the arrival of American Baptist Missionaries Rev. W.W. Campbell and his wife. Collaborating with Rev. Dr. J.E. Clough in Ongole, they embarked on a mission to evangelize the Deccan region. Their tireless efforts resulted in the inaugural Baptist Mission station in Secunderabad, followed by expansion to Hanumkonda (1880) and ultimately, the establishment of the Warangal church (1893).
The ABM missionaries, having nurtured the church's growth, wisely handed over leadership to native Evangelists, appointing one as pastor. As the congregation continued to flourish, its needs expanded. In a significant milestone, the church relocated to its current premises in 1942, made possible by the generous support of the Nizam's government. This strategic move positioned the church for sustained growth and enhanced ministry.
In 1942, a proposal was made to construct a larger church to accommodate the growing congregation, and by November of the same year, the foundation for the new building was laid. After years of diligent effort, the church was finally dedicated on April 29, 1956.
In 1998, we joyfully commemorated our church's centennial anniversary, honoring a rich legacy and embarking on a new century of worship and community.
Over the years, our church has undergone numerous expansions to accommodate its growing attendance. In 2014, a visionary proposal was made to construct a new church building featuring state-of-the-art facilities. The foundation for this building was laid in October 2014, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter. After years of diligent effort, the building was formally dedicated in October 2024, commemorating a significant milestone in the church's history and enhancing its capacity to serve the community
